Brazil requests global tax on the super rich in G7 summit - The Brazilian president Lula da Silva said, “It’s time the super rich pay the taxes that correspond to them,” and said such taxes could be used to address hunger and poverty. Source, source.
Rohingya people trapped, persecuted - Rohingya people are fleeing to Bangladesh after over a thousand have been killed and villages burnt down in Myanmar. The Arakan Army has warned people to leave, as it gains more control over Rakhine state, in the west of the country, close to Bangladesh. The Rohingya are also regularly attacked by the Myanmar army, and so feel they aren’t able to stay where they are, nor flee. Source, source, source.
60% increase in displacement in Haiti since March - A total of 580,000 people are now internally displaced (forced to move within their country) in Haiti, largely as a result of organised violence, poverty, and a lack of a functioning government and services. Nearly all those internally displaced are currently hosted by communities already struggling with overburdened social services and poor infrastructure. Source.
Deaths on migration route to Canary Islands soar to 1,000 a month - More than 5,000 people died in the first five months of this year trying to reach Spain by sea, 95% of them on Atlantic Ocean crossings from West and Northwest Africa to the Canary Islands. Fatalities along the route have increased by almost 700% in the first five months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Source.
Drought and desertification worst in 70 years in Syria - According to a study by the Environment Agency of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, approximately 15,000 hectares have recently been desertified, with another 85% in the region under threat. Source.
Israel has detained 640 children in the West Bank since October - 250 children remain in prison, where they are facing torture and coerced confessions. Source.
Construction union strikes in Panama - Construction workers went on a 24-hour strike in Panama, seeing key roads closed around the country, in response to what they say is political persecution against their union, Suntracs. The union’s bank accounts were arbitrarily shut down in November after the union played a key role in massive protests then against mines. Source.
Turkey - attacks against Kurds and sexual diversity community - A local human rights group said that in 2023, it received 781 reports of torture or ill-treatment. Women, Kurds, and sexually diverse people were over-represented as victims of attacks. Source.
