5000 victims in Colombia to receive land as compensation - Landless small farmers in Colombia will receive a total of 18,000 hectares of land in compensation for the impacts of the armed conflict. The land was handed over by paramilitary leaders. Source, source.
Britain under pressure to issue reparations for slave trade and other atrocities - Some participants in the upcoming Commonwealth heads of government meeting want to put reparations on the agenda. The Ghanaian foreign minister for example, spoke of both financial and in kind reparations. Source.
Venezuela issues arrest warrant for Argentinian president Milei - Venezuela's Public Prosecutor's Office announced an investigation into President Javier Milei for crimes the theft of a Venezuelan state-owned airplane that was transferred to the United States. Source.
Israeli terror attacks on Lebanon kill at least 37 - The death toll from explosions caused by booby-trapped pagers and two-way radios over the past two days in various regions of Lebanon has risen to 37, with 2,931 people injured. The blasts occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday. CNN reported on Wednesday that Israeli officials had informed the US about an Israeli plan to conduct an operation in Lebanon. In response, a Hezbollah leader said Israel’s attacks were a “declaration of war”. Source, source, source.
People from a city in Libya have been forced to move due to rising groundwater - An upsurge in groundwater is seeing homes and streets flooded in the coastal city in what appears to be a product of the climate crisis. Source.
Typhoon Yagi kills over 200 in Myanmar - Some 236 people have died, 80 are missing, thousands have been displaced, and around half a million affected. Source.
Fires burn 5.4 million hectares in Brazilian Amazon - The fires are killing millions of animals, impacting Indigenous territories, and further aggravating the climate crisis. Source.
Tunisia protests - On Friday, Tunisians gathered in the capital and around the country, calling for the restoration of democratic freedoms and the release of political prisoners and journalists. The protests took place just weeks ahead of presidential elections. Source.
