Afghan migrants face deportation, over 800 homes demolished in Pakistan - Hundreds of undocumented Afghans have been detained in Pakistan as part of a deportation campaign. Some 1.7 million Afghans were given until October the 31st to leave or face eviction. More than 165,000 have already fled. In the capital, Islamabad, over 800 homes in a single, bustling town, were destroyed. Source.
More than 2.6 million Sudanese people displaced, whole generation of children at risk - Of those forced to leave their home, some 400,000 people have sought refuge in Chad. UNICEF has different figures however, and note the country has seen the largest displacement of children in the world, as over 3 million children have been forcibly displaced because of the war. Panama ends Canadian mining contract after massive protests - On Wednesday, Panama’s parliament receded a Canadian mine’s contracts following national protests, strikes, school classes cancelled, road blocks, and more. Protestors felt the largest open-pit copper mine in Central America was a threat to the environment and an attack on Panama’s sovereignty. Source, source.
Canadian Start-up Wins DR Congo Methane Rights Despite Failing Criteria - Meanwhile, Alfajiri Energy Corporation, a Canada-based start-up, was chosen by the Democratic Republic of Congo government to extract methane from the country's notorious "killer" Lake Kivu, despite failing to meet the minimum financial requirements. Costa Rica effectively removes goods tax from menstrual products - The country passed a law that lowers the goods tax on menstrual products from 13% to 1% - the same rate that basic goods products are taxed at. Source.
