Panamanians celebrate victory against biggest open-pit copper mine in Central America - This week, after over a month of strikes and protests, and food and gas shortages due to road blocks, protesters celebrated across the country when Panama’s Supreme Court ruled against the Canadian mine. The ruling came as Panama was also marking 200 years of independence. Source, source, source, source.
Failed coup attempt in Sierra Leone, 20 dead - A series of attacks on military barracks and prisons in Sierra Leone over the weekend was a failed coup attempt, according to police and government officials. Some 13 military officers and one citizen were detained, and the attempt allegedly included current and former security forces. The attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people and the escape of over 2,200 inmates. Source, source.
Ecuador court recognises some Indigenous land - The Ecuadorian government offered an official apology and a court has recognised 42,000 ha as Siekopai land and delivered land titles to Indigenous communities. Source, source.
Nepal registers first same-sex marriage - Local authorities in a village in Nepal registered the country’s first same-sex marriage on Wednesday, five months after the Supreme Court cleared the way for such marriages. Source.
Indian worker and farmer Mega March - Workers and farmers in India held a three-day countrywide Mahapadav or Mega March this week, following a call by central trade unions (CTUs) and the Samyukta Kisna Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of farmer’s movements. People are denouncing the “corporate” approach of the national government and its “anti-farmer, anti-labor and anti-people” policies. Source.
Pro-Palestine rally attacked in Indonesia - Members of the Manguni paramilitary brigade attacked a peaceful pro-Palestine rally in Bitung, North Sulawesi. Footage shows the paramilitaries carrying an Israeli flag, burning a Palestinian one, and beating up a protester. The Manguni are often hired by Indonesian authorities as security at ports. There was a massive pro-Palestine march in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday, with protestors wearing mostly white, and another in Bali on Saturday. Source, source, source.
