Argentina’s Milei faces impeachment calls after promoting cryptocurrency - President Milei promoted a little-known cryptocurrency, whose price soared then collapsed after his endorsement, leading to losses for thousands of investors. Around the same time, Milei signed a decree transforming Argentina’s Bank of the Nation into a corporation in a move to facilitate its future privatization or allow private investors to join its capital. Attacks spread in Congo - Following the recent takeover of Goma (North Kivu province), the M23 has advanced to the south and captured towns in southern Kivu. Hundreds of thousands of people have had to flee the Kivu region. Thousands have been killed, with bodies left in the streets and hospitals overwhelmed. Thirteen displacement sites for people who have fled have been destroyed, leaving inhabitants without access to food and shelter. The US government has imposed sanctions on a few Rwandan government members, as the international community criticises Rwanda’s role in supporting the M23. Source, source, source, source, source.
Sudan: 433 killed in three days by RSF - Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched the attack in White Nile state, as its leaders arrived in Kenya to announce a parallel so-called “peace and unity” government. Source.
Mali: 48 people killed in gold mine collapse - According to a local official, a Caterpillar machine allegedly fell onto an artisanal mine where a group of women were working in search of gold. Just a few weeks before, another gold mine collapse killed around 10 people in Mali. Informal mines often have quite unsafe working conditions. Source, source.
Former Brazilian president Bolsonaro charged in coup plot - The Attorney General’s Office sent a report on Tuesday to the Federal Supreme Court accusing 34 people of involvement in the January 8 2023 coup attempt. Though Bolsonaro wasn’t present in Brasilia at the time of the coup attempt, he was allegedly involved in its planning, which included poisoning Lula. Source, source.
Rafah, in Gaza, declared disaster zone with 90% of city destroyed - Once home to 1.4 million people, the city has been destroyed by Israeli attacks. Source.
