Excluded Headlines: If 70 people died in a mine in France, you would know about it. But not in Mali. Massive strike in Argentina ...
This week: Strikes, Ecuador/US military cooperation, and more. Stay up to date on the global news stories the US- and Eurocentric media overlook, with author and journalist, Tamara Pearson.
In this week’s overlooked, distorted, and ignored news about the Global South:
Argentina’s first general strike in 4 years: Over 1.5 million people mobilised in the streets, and a lot of public transport ground to a halt on Wednesday. People were protesting president Milei’s DNU policy, which deregulates the country’s economy and obliterates hundreds of laws that protect workers’ and people’s rights. It came into effect at the start of January and has seen massive spending cuts, half the ministries shut down, state run industries privatised, business deregulated, and protests restricted.
The strike has been covered somewhat by mainstream media, but they have used language like “foes” and “derail austerity” to describe the protestors. The new president, Milei, is perhaps so far right that even the mainstream can’t totally stomach him, but there are also a lot of transnational economic interests hoping to benefit from his rule.
