Gov’t, companies doing nothing about multiple oil spills in Ecuadorian Amazon - There have been at least six oil spills between June and August this year, Indigenous communities in the Amazon have denounced. The polluted rivers makes it hard for them to access water or to fish. They say there are no plans so far to clean up the spills or to compensate those affected. Source.
Black rain warning in Brazil - Rain contaminated with soot could fall on southern Brazil and northern Uruguay as a cold front clashes with smoke from fires. Source.
DR Congo to receive first shipment of mpox vaccines - The Democratic Republic of Congo, at the centre of the mpox outbreak and 650 deaths so far, is set to receive 100,000 doses today. Source.
129 people killed while trying to escape prison in DRC - At the same time, an attempted prison break saw security forces killing at least 129 people - some by shooting and others in a stampede. Prisons in the country are severely overcrowded. Source.
Worst floods in years in Nigeria - Recent floods in Nigeria have killed hundreds of people and displaced more than 200,000 others, while destroying homes and vast areas of farmland. Source.
Child malnutrition rates at all time high in Yemen - Over half a million children are starving to death in Yemen. Conflict and poverty are combining to have a devastating effect. This should be a top story in the media, but it isn’t. Disturbing images warning for the sources. Source, source.
Palestine - Israel has carried out an unprecedented arrest campaign against Palestinians in West Bank, detaining over 180 people over the past almost two weeks, including children. A report has found that Israel is deliberately destroying areas along eastern Gaza, destroying buildings and land after taking control of parts of it. And, children in southern Gaza are receiving polio vaccines, with 100,000 vaccinated so far, but while the attacks against them continue. Source, source, source.
