Kashmir massacre sees India and Pakistan taking actions against each other - Armed people killed 26 civilians in the disputed territory of Kashmir on Tuesday. Since then, both countries have closed the land border, declared each other's defence advisors in missions in New Delhi and Islamabad persona non grata, India has suspended a treaty that regulated the sharing of water from the Indus River, and Pakistan has paused all bilateral agreements and suspended all trade with India. There were protests around Pakistan, particularly in response to the suspension of the water treaty. In Pahalgam, where the massacre occurred, many tourists have now left. Brazil greenlights Alzheimer's drug - Brazil’s health agency has approved the use of donanemabe to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease in people with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia. Source.
US tries to strike deal with the DRC to provide “security” in exchange for minerals - In the midst of a horrific and long-lasting civil war, the US is trying to access some of the Congo’s minerals, critical for technology. This comes as the M23 has been gaining ground and taking some cities this year. Source.
Gaza - An Israeli airstrike hit the Gazan children’s hospital on Wednesday, destroying its solar panels. Since March, the Israeli army has been bombing water plants and severing pipelines, and now people have no choice but to drink seawater. With most banks and ATMs destroyed and limited internet and electricity, Gazans are also struggling to access cash, and brokers are profiting from that. Source, source, source.
Pakistan has expelled 80,000 Afghans since April 1 - The government said that from now, if anyone provides a shop, housing, or physical space to “illegal” foreigners, “they will be held accountable under the law.” More than 1.3 million Afghans who have Proof of Registration cards from the UNHCR, have also been told to move outside the capital. Many Afghans have lived in Pakistan for decades, particularly since the US started bombing Afghanistan in 2001. Source.
Colombia to hold referendum on worker rights - After the congress rejected the president’s proposed changes, they will go to a nation-wide vote. Colombians will vote on 12 questions, including double pay for working on a Sunday, a maximum eight-hour work day, incentives for small businesses, social security for app delivery workers, and mandatory hiring of people with disabilities. Indian farmers protest visit of JD Vance - Protesters are concerned because the Indian government is under heavy pressure from the Trump administration to open the country’s market to US agricultural products. Farmers say that would be a disaster for India’s already crisis-ridden agriculture sector. Source.
Renewed RSF shelling kills at least 55 in North Darfur, Sudan - On Monday and Tuesday the Sudanese Army (also responsible for attacks and deaths) reported that the RSF had used intense artillery shelling in the region. Source.
Palestine solidarity protests in Morocco delay Maersk ship - On April 20 in Tangier, Morocco, protests were held against the docking of the ship Nexoe Maersk. The ship was previously delayed at the port of Casablanca for 39 hours due to similar protests. Moroccan dockworkers had also put out a call to boycott the Nexoe Maersk ship, because the vessel would be carrying military equipment to Israel. Source.
