Excluded Headlines: Massive gaps in media coverage depend on the wealth of the people drowning, Argentina protests, Yemen..
Stay up to date on the global news stories the US- and Eurocentric media overlooks, with journalist and author, Tamara Pearson.
In this week’s Global South news, downplayed or ignored by the English-language mainstream media:
Pakistanis locked below deck in shipwreck tragedy - The mainstream media has thoroughly covered the five billionaires/millionaires on the submarine (submersible) who died this week. And though the sinking of migrant boats has been covered, the significance has been seriously downplayed in comparison. Hundreds of people likely died on a shipwreck of migrants and refugees near Greece on June 14. It now appears Pakistani migrants may have been singled out and confined below deck. Up to 39 people are also feared dead after a boat carrying migrants sank off Spain’s Canary Islands on Wednesday. Source, source.
It is difficult to demonstrate the massive difference in media coverage with current hard data, but this Google Trends result gives some indication of coverage and interest gaps. I added the second graph to demonstrate that my search terms aren’t the issue. The result for “refugees” is despite the fact that World Refugee Day was this week.
Multiple crises in Yemen - After 9 years of conflict, the country is experiencing economic collapse and impossible prices. Farmers want to sell off their livestock as no one can afford meat, but the blockade by the Saudi coalition won’t allow them to. The climate crisis is also exacerbating water scarcity, which in turn is severely affecting the 60% of Yeminis who work on farms. Source, source.
Argentina protests lithium plundering - 170 people have been injured and 68 arrested during repression of protests in Jujuy, Argentina. The province is controlled by a right wing governor, whom protesters accuse of passing a constitutional reform that will allow the government to kick Indigenous people off their land and plunder natural resources, including lithium, and also criminalise protesting. Following the police violence, marches were held around Argentina and more protests were held in Jujuy, including 20 road blocks and a general strike. Source, source, source, source.
Brazil increases sugarcane energy - Electricity generation from sugarcane biomass grew 28.7% in the first four months of 2023 in Brazil. Source
41 killed in attack on Ugandan school - 38 students were killed in a night time attack on a school in a remote area of Uganda, likely by rebels. Source.
Heat wave in India continues to take tole - 98 people have died in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and one party is demanding their families be provided with compensation, as it blames the government for the power cuts. As temperatures reach the mid 40s, hospitals are overwhelmed with people suffering from heat stroke. Source, source, source.
