Cuba struggles with fuel shortages- Cuban transport and agriculture are being severely impacted by a fuel shortage, largely thanks to the US blockade. Fifteen Cubans have been tried for selling petrol via social media at above-regulation prices. There is concern about food supply in three months time, as farmers can’t obtain fuel to run the machines used for turning over soil. Mexico and Russia recently sent Cuba some fuel. Thai trans MP advocates for gender inclusivity - Women make up just 15% of legislators in Thailand. Paramee “Juang” Waichongcharoen, a trans woman who was elected to parliament last month, will be advocating for more gender inclusive policies and for sexual diversity rights. Source.
Hundreds of refugees feared dead in shipwreck - While this story has been thoroughly covered by the mainstream media (eg here), the media glossed over the new EU Migration Deal made just days before. The deal worsens the situation for people fleeing poverty and conflict in northern Africa and the Middle East - even though Europe’s general approach to migrants arriving in boats was already completely inhumane. The deal entrenches human rights violations, includes improper processing of asylum seekers, and increased detentions. Source.
Lebanon won’t be able to pay salaries by the end of the month - The country has been facing difficulties since it wasn’t able to elect a new president in October last year. The president is the only one able to pass certain measures or convene a parliamentary session. That means additional funds for civil servants’ wages can’t be approved. Source.
Third heat wave in Mexico - Mexico is currently facing its third heat wave this year, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees C in some parts of the country. Six people have died from the current heat wave and the country has recorded 20% less rain this year compared to historic averages. The situation is negatively affecting farmers and people who work outdoors. Source, source.
Ecuadorians march to demand the country be declared free of mining - Marches were held in 10 of the 24 provinces, motivated by a desire to protect life and people’s sovereignty. Source.
Spain smuggling rubbish into Morocco - Moroccan politicians are discussing how to protect their country from being a dumping ground for Global North rubbish. This follows revelations that eight people in Spain are being investigated for trafficking 5,700 tonnes of plastic waste to Morocoo. Source, source.
Aid cuts to Syria - The UN has warned that a funding crisis will see it cut food aid to 2.5 million Syrians. Source.
