Ecuador’s Noboa allows the US to use the Galapagos Islands as a military base - In an unravelling of Ecuadorian sovereignty and a violation of the environmentally-important islands, Ecuador will allow ships, war planes, arms, military personal, and more from the US on to the islands. The US will use them for control and patrol activities, and the ports and airport of the island will be built up on or adapted for the US’s use. The move violates Ecuador’s constitution, but in September, Noboa announced a reform to the constitution in order to allow the base, then did not waited for that reform process before giving the US the go ahead. Cyclone destroys Mayotte island’s infrastructure - Mayotte, an archipelago somewhat near Mozambique and invaded by France, was hit by Cyclone Chido on Saturday. Hospitals were destroyed, and fire stations and airports severely damaged. Whole towns, full of informal-type housing, were flattened, and people are struggling to access food and water. Officials believe the death toll could reach thousands. Mayotte’s population is 320,000. Some 34 people in Mozambique also died as a result of the cyclone. Source, source, source, source, source.
7.3 earthquake hits Vanuatu - The capital has no water, as the earthquake destroyed reservoirs, while communications also collapsed. The quake hit Tuesday and flattened buildings, and while a dozen or so deaths have been confirmed, that figure is likely to rise. Source.
Israel Drops “Earthquake Bomb” on Syria - A strike by Israeli forces caused tremors equivalent to a 3.1 earthquake. The bomb caused a huge mushroom cloud, and the US urged its citizens to leave Syria. Source, source.
Protests in Qamishlo(i) and Kobanê against occupation - Thousands marched in both Syrian cities against the presence of the SNA and what they called the “invading Turkish state.” Source, source.
Coup-president Boluarte has historically low support in Peru - According to a Datum poll, disapproval for Boluarte is at 95%. Source.
745 femicides in Colombia in 2024 - This year through to October, there have been 745 femicides registered in Colombia, though the real figure is likely higher. Source.
